Heat in this region has always been the biggest cause of premature battery failure. It’s also something that traditional Lead Acid and, more advanced Lithium battery manufacturers have been concerned with.

For Lead Acid/ GEL/ AGM, heat can cause battery life loss of 50% for every 8°C above 25°C – compared to just 12.25% for Lead Crystal® Batteries for every 8°C above 25°C.
For Lithium Batteries, the problem is more one of thermal runaway – although Lithium batteries are rated to higher temperatures, constant operation / charge/ discharge at high temperatures still affects the capacity and life of the batteries, with an increased risk of explosion or fire.

The most commonly used batteries in electric cleaning equipment are Lead Acid or Li-Ion (Lithium), with the former giving the benefits of ease of use and latter giving benefits of weight and service life. Until now, the choice of battery was usually down to price/performance. Now, there’s another option. Lithium batteries, although high performing, are designed to cycle. An average Lithium battery will lose 5% of its capacity for every 500 times you plug in to charge. Lead Crystal Batteries last longer on smaller use cycles – and don’t mind being used in partial state of charge.

Lead Crystal Batteries have minimal sulphation build up
Lead Acid/ GEL/ AGM batteries experience a sulphation build up with use, and more particularly in the heat. Over time, this build up covers the plates and makes the Electrolyte less effective. This build up can be removed through high voltage/ pulse charging, but it will settle in the sump – taking away from capacity

Lead Crystal® Batteries have very low internal resistance
Lead Acid/ GEL/AGM batteries have a higher internal resistance due to the components used in making the battery. AGM for example, is Absorbent Glass Mat – Glass is an insulator! Higher internal resistance means higher heat, lower efficiency on charge and discharge and ultimately, less life and lower run time per charge.
